Women-owned businesses on Instagram

From the 1900s to 2022, so much has changed for women. The fight to achieve gender equality has not come to a halt yet, if anything, the pace keeps growing each year. And to celebrate that substantial growth and awareness that women and the society as a whole have achieved, each year the 8th of March is observed as International Women’s Day.

This date was officially declared its status by the United Nations in 1977 and since then each year the women’s day celebration has been based on a theme. The theme for Women’s day 2022 is the hashtag Break The Bias. This theme gave us all a chance to reflect on observations like the biases faced by women, the achievements of women who have broken the biases for themselves and other women, the input of the judiciary in helping women to stake their stand against the biases.

Women struggle with biases on a daily basis. Some manage to break it while others are firmly working towards it. Some make it to the news, while others don’t. But social media has made it possible to women to raise their voices, share their stories, and help each other.

We see a lot of women influencers today who started from scratch and managed to make their dreams turn true. They are using their platform to do the best for themselves and their social media community.

The definition of success is subjective. But certain phenomena like breaking stereotypes, starting a business, leading an organization, definitely count as milestones. This is the social media version of women’s achievements that we are talking about. But let’s not ignore the fact that the other aspects of the ‘offline’ life like securing a job that offers equal pay for women, being financially independent, making their own decisions, having a say in the marriage, access to women’s hygiene, are also as significant achievements as the others that women must celebrate with pride.

When we speak of women influencers, some people subconsciously limit them to niches like fashion, makeup, skincare, etc. The fact that we belittle women for following their passion in the mainstream niches speaks that we still have a long way to go. The influencer marketing industry celebrates women of all niches equally and so do their respective audiences.

One of the biggest milestones in the journey of women breaking biases is that many have successfully started their own businesses. Falguni Nayar, founder of Nykaa, Vineetha Singh co-founder of Sugar Cosmetics, Divya Gokulnath co-founder of BYJU’s are only a few of the many successful women entrepreneurs. Many women have also managed to cash their hobbies by using Instagram as an ideal platform for their side hustle.

Women are a part of every niche that you can imagine. Furthermore, they have also given rise to new influencer marketing niches or business niches that were not available before but were the need of the hour. So, this is us introducing you to some of the most influential women who started their own businesses to follow their passion and bring a change in society.
